She specializes in leveraging inter-American systems and international protection mechanisms to advocate for democracy and human rights. Her expertise extends to managing international cooperation projects focused on democratic strengthening, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding through community development. Alexa has been recognized with the Martin Luther King Award for Democracy and Human Rights , was a National Endowment for Democracy fellow and Sakharov Fellow of European Parlament. She has published extensively on topics such as nonviolent civic resistance, public policy, citizen participation, and pro-democracy movements in exile, maintaining her commitment to advancing democratic freedoms in the face of authoritarian regimes. Her activism intensified in 2018 when she joined the National Blue and White Unity (UNAB), where she held various leadership roles as part of the national leadership board, including coordinating the National Coalition. Due to political persecution, Alexa was forced into exile, first in Costa Rica in 2021, in february 2023 she was judged in absense for treason and prived of her nationality.
